Claygrounds UK clay shooting grounds

Your first clay shooting visit

Clay shooting takes care, patience and practice. A first lesson gives you time to learn with an instructor and get to know the sport.

Choose a session

Look for lessons and taster sessions on the ground’s page. Grounds may call tasters “have-a-go” sessions. Tell the ground you are new to the sport and ask which session it recommends. If you want to learn with a friend, ask whether you can book together.

Check what the price includes

Ask about instruction, gun hire, clays, cartridges and eye and hearing protection. Check how long the session lasts, how many shots you get and whether you share the time with other people.

Book your first visit

Book directly with the ground. Ask what to wear, what to bring and when to arrive. Mention any access needs and the ages of any children who want to take part so the ground can confirm suitable arrangements.

Learn with care

Follow your instructor’s guidance and the ground’s safety rules. Ask if you are unsure about anything. Give other shooters space and respect the staff, neighbours and countryside around the ground.

Keep learning

If you enjoy your first session, ask your instructor about further lessons and how to continue at that ground.

If you have a question about certificates or supervision, read Shooting without a certificate and confirm the arrangements with your ground.
